Can I rest this magnifier directly on the page?

No – this is a hand held sheet magnifier, which has to be held away from a page or subject to magnify the content. Place your subject matter on a flat surface, or read from an armchair and just move the lens in or out until you find the point of focus. The frame does allow you to hold it between a forefinger and thumb alone, but for greater control, it’s more common to use both hands when viewing.
