These fit-over sunglasses from NoIR have a Dark Grey-coloured filter, which allows just 11% light transmission. They can be a helpful low vision aid across a range of eye conditions, including Post-Cataract, Glare, Glaucoma, Corneal Pathology and Diabetic Retinopathy. They also offer 100% ultraviolet (UV) protection.

Designed to fit over normal glasses

Ideal for spectacle wearers these fit-over shields have been primarily designed to fit over normal glasses. They offer a far more affordable and practical solution than having to purchased expensive special prescription sunglasses. With all-round filtering, including side shields and top brow, they give light-sensitive eyes some relief from both the sun’s rays and glare from other lighting sources.

Visible light transmission

With their very low VLT of only 11%, these shields greatly limit the amount of light that gets through to the eye. VLT – Visible Light Transmission – indicates the percentage of the visible spectrum (380 to 720nm) that transmits through the lens, balanced with the sensitivity of the human eye. A VLT of 65% down to 35% would broadly be regarded as high enough to be useful in most environments. Filters such as these, with a VLT in the 20s or below, allow much less light to get through. For safety reasons, they should only be used in areas where working light is very bright or well-illuminated.

Ultraviolet absorption and protection against glare

All NoIR filters absorb UV radiation to 400nm. Many lenses also block blue light, which helps protect the retina from the high-energy wavelengths thought to contribute to the degenerative process culminating in macular degeneration. NoIR filters prevent 99% of all glare-causing high-energy short wavelengths from reaching the eye. By absorbing the energy from the sun’s heat, they help cut infrared wavelengths and effectively ‘cool’ the light intensity so that wearers enjoy a more comfortable and soothing viewing experience.
